Information Science
Graduate Program in Information Science (Academic Master's and Doctoral Degrees)
Program Description
The academic master's degree in Information Science aims to promote the scientific competence of graduates, contributing to the training of professors and researchers in the area of information. The doctorate, in turn, aims to train high-level professionals who can act as autonomous researchers and as professors in the area of Information Science, seeking to provide a comprehensive view of the area, develop a solid theoretical basis in the field, stimulate the development of scientific production with innovative, socially oriented and relevant research projects.
Research Topics
The Graduate Program in Information Science offers courses at master's and doctoral levels with a single area of concentration, Information Management, organized into two research topics:
- Production, socialization and uses of information and knowledge: Theoretical, epistemological or empirical studies carried out in this line contemplate human communication phenomena, particularly from the perspective of three fundamental perspectives: production, socialization and uses of information and knowledge. In the first perspective, studies are induced on the production of information and knowledge, and the relationship between them, at different levels (individual, collective or institutional) and contexts, as well as the multiple factors that influence it (cognitive, sociocultural, historical, political-economic, technological). In the second perspective, socialization, phenomena related to social practices and circumstances associated with the mediation of information and knowledge in society are contemplated, as well as its dynamics, means and technologies, subjectivities involved, institutions or systems and forces that influence it. In the third perspective, studies are carried out related to uses and different ways of appropriating information and knowledge, and the individual and collective effects resulting from them. Finally, still from this perspective, studies are carried out on informational behaviors and practices in different contexts and under different conditioning factors.
- Management, technologies and organization of information and knowledge: Theoretical, epistemological or empirical studies carried out in this line recognize the social dimension of the phenomena of management and organization of information and knowledge as well as technologies. Based on this perspective, studies are induced in the line that contemplate phenomena related to the systematization of informational processes with a view to improving decision-making and performance of organizations, social groups and contexts. The line also carries out studies focused on the organization of information and knowledge as a phenomenon of its own or as an element of the phenomena of information and knowledge management. The line includes research on information systems in different contexts. Likewise, studies that conceive technology as a phenomenon associated with the management and organization of information and knowledge are contemplated.
